Product documentation is essential, but it often feels like a time-consuming task for product managers. Today, let’s dive into Boggl.ai startup’s journey and how they are solving problems in product documentation for product managers
Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. It is one of the posts in the startup series I’ve started.
As a Product Manager, I’ve often wrestled with the complex, time-consuming nature of product documentation.
It’s a universal pain point—one that boggles the mind and drains productivity.
From user story handover to release notes,
From product strategy to roadmap..
There are literally n documents that a PM will need to write in a product’s lifetime.
Above all, the template of each document varies!
The pain doesn’t end after you create a document; you also need to keep track of them, maintaining updates, and so on.
It is the same reason why Boggl.ai impressed me because it is trying to solve a real pain point for PMs or a job that product team wants to fulfil.
I’ve tried it out and it is amazing!
In this article, we’ll dive into Boggl.ai’s startup journey, exploring how they’re addressing a universal challenge for product managers and tech professionals alike, what marketing channels they’re using to get adoption.
What is Boggl.ai
Boggl.ai is an AI platform that helps product professionals write supercharged product documents.
It was founded by Swarna Hebbar from India.
The idea behind Boggl.ai
After being part of a acquihire, Swarna found herself juggling both UX design and product management roles.
It was during this time that she realized a significant gap in the market- product documentation seemed to be disconnected from other product processes.
This insight led to the creation of Boggl.ai, a platform that initially started as a simple PRD template but has now evolved into a comprehensive workflow based product documentation powered by AI.
Top 3 use cases of Boggl.ai
- Triage feedback & Create roadmaps: Using Voice/Text AI, Boggl assists in sorting feedback & incorporating them onto product roadmaps. Roadmap items can be leveraged to generate requirements.
- Generate requirements & assign tasks: You can create detailed product documentation or just user stories for your product features.Upon creation, you can assign tasks directly from PRDs on Boggl or Jira.
- Generate test cases & customer documentation:You can automate the generation of test cases, customer documentation directly from PRDs or Text/Voice inputs.
Target audience
As it is evident that Boggl.ai operates in PM space, it goes without saying that PMs are the primary audience for this startup. In a nutshell, these are the target markets that this new-age startup is aiming to tap into:
Product Managers in B2B SaaS: Especially those in small to mid-sized teams
Startup Founders: Particularly those directly involved in product development within their startups
Seed to Series B Companies: Teams who require to generate a lot of customer documentation can benefit from the automation on Boggl.ai
How did Boggl.ai get initial traction
It all started by launching a beta tester program, which attracted a handful of solo product users.
The goal now is to make Boggl.ai indispensable for product managers, encouraging them to advocate for its adoption within their companies.
Following are the channels used for marketing:
- Cold emails: Trust me, this works. In an age dominated by social media marketing and targeted campaigns, cold emails are often underrated. For example, this newsletter gained more subscribers by personally reaching out to contacts in my network than by just promoting it on LinkedIn.
- Product Hunt Launch:Any indie hacker would know this platform. For new startups and apps, Product Hunt provides the perfect head start you need.
- Launching on AI marketplaces and directories: Submitting your startup to marketplaces and directories is a great way to spread the word. Here are some directories:
- LinkedIn marketing: This one is my favorite. As a LinkedIn fan, I spend more of my social media time on this platform than any other.By carefully curating your network and posting regularly, you can gain the traction needed for initial adoption. In fact, I promoted this newsletter solely through LinkedIn. - Blog: Having a dedicated blog for your startup can help generate organic traffic.Of course, this only works if your content is carefully curated with search engine optimization (SEO) in mind.
- Reddit outreach on product platforms: One cannot ignore Reddit when it comes to startups. You’ll find early adopters, validate ideas, and even gain your first paid users. All of this is possible with Reddit if you post regularly in relevant subreddits.Just make sure to read the rules before posting, and avoid spamming—Reddit bans are real!
Lessons learned
The initial version of Boggl.ai was over-engineered, with too many detailed features that ultimately became redundant.
The problem with over-engineering is that it leads to longer development cycles and delays the product market fit reach.
The integration of AI helped the team refocus on scaling horizontally and prioritizing features that truly add value.
Plans for scaling up
Boggl.ai is in the early stages of establishing its presence in the market.
It is focusing on a funnel-based adoption approach, with the next step being to position Boggl.ai as a must-have tool for individual product managers, who can then advocate for its adoption at the company level.
While the long-term goal is to transition to a sales-led strategy, direct sales to companies are currently challenging due to the bootstrapped nature of the business
If you’re a PM or a founder looking to efficiently manage product documentation, you should definitely checkout Boggl.ai or even reach out the founder, Swarna through LinkedIn.
That’s all for today, see you again!
